FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. When will UFRGSMUN be held?

The fourth annual UFRGS Model United Nations (UFRGSMUN) will be held from the 31st of October to the 4th of November, 2006, in Porto Alegre, Brazil.

2. Who can take part in UFRGSMUN?

UFRGSMUN is a simulation for university students from any area of study developed from the belief that an interdisciplinary environment can bring delegates a broader experience.

A delegation is a group of university students (or recently graduated) that will represent one country during the conference. Each delegation may have only one delegate per committee, except for the Security Council and the Historical Security Council, for which the participation of two delegates is requested.

Each delegation may enroll a Faculty Advisor to assist the delegates’ in their research and oversee them during the conference. He/she may, and is fully invited to, accompany the delegation during UFRGSMUN. The advisor should be graduated, but not necessarily a professor from the delegation’s university. Special cases shall be analyzed by the UFRGSMUN Staff.

3. Is there a possibility for inter-institutional delegations?

Delegations with students from different universities are allowed.

4. How is the UFRGSMUN dynamics?

For information about the UFRGSMUN dynamics and for further information about the event, consult the sections “About UFRGSMUN” and “What is a MUN?” of this Website’s Introduction. And do not hesitate to contact us if you have any doubt!

5. What is a Study Guide?

A Study Guide is a general guide to the topics to be prepared by the Academic Staff members. Each committee’s Study Guide will contain general information on the topics, the critical issues to be dealt with and sources to help delegates deepen their research. The guides will be released in this website as the event nears.

6. What is a Position Paper?

A Position Paper is a one-page-per-topic statement that outlines your country's position towards each topic. This policy statement is required from each representative for participating in UFRGSMUN.

7. What is the Country List?

The Country List contains a selected number of countries to organize the countries’ assignment, assuring that all committees will have a balanced distribution of members. If the country where you live is not on the list but you would like to represent it, please contact us! The Country List is the most important criterion that delegations must consider when preparing their registration at UFRGSMUN.

8. What are the UFRGSMUN advantages?

Model United Nations are excellent practical means to learn about the United Nations and understand contemporary issues of international concern. They are a unique opportunity to gather different students with different backgrounds and bring them in formal debate sessions to discuss the problems of our world, enabling them to share and to propagate the results of the discussions. UFRGSMUN is a simulation for university students who will interact and work together, experiencing the challenges of international negotiation by assuming the roles of ambassadors from UN member States.

By the end of UFRGSMUN, delegates will receive certificates acknowledging their participation.
